Trece años de IPv6 en México: Caso UNAM

Abstract

Durante los últimos trece años el proyecto y grupo de trabajo de IPv6 de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), ha establecido un hito en el despliegue de IPv6 en México, y ha continuado la realización de una serie de pruebas de IPv6 con diferentes sistemas operativos, equipos y aplicaciones, que le permitieron ofrecer las primeras conexiones IPv6 a muchos países alrededor del mundo, principalmente de América Latina y México. En este artículo se presentan los principales retos, las experiencias y las perspectivas en el uso de IPv6 en México, en particular en la red de la UNAM para ofrecer conectividad IPv6. Se hace mención de las alternativas y los servicios implementados, debido a la falta de conexiones comerciales nativas IPv6, hasta hace poco, además del soporte IPv6 en los equipos de Backbone de la red de la UNAM (RedUNAM). También se incluye la historia del desarrollo de IPv6 en México, sobre todo en la RNIE de México (CUDI), con las pruebas y los resultados obtenidos antes y después de la finalización del proyecto 6Bone en 2006, que marcó el comienzo de una importante fase de producción en el uso de IPv6; la transición continua de IPv4 a IPv6, y la coexistencia de ambas versiones. Finalmente, se hace referencia a la cooperación y las actividades comunes entre muchas universidades de América Latina y la UNAM, como resultado de su red IPv6 experimental (RedUNAMv6) y el uso de muchas conexiones, antes y hoy en día, con la red de Cooperación Latinoamericana de Redes Avanzadas (Red CLARA).

During the last thirteen years the IPv6 Project and Working Group of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has established a milestone in the deployment of IPv6 in Mexico, and has continued performing a series of IPv6 tests with different operating systems, equipments and applications, that allowed it to provide the firsts IPv6 connections to many countries around the world mainly from Latin America and Mexico. In this paper are presented the main challenges, experiences and perspectives in the use of IPv6 in Mexico, in particular in the UNAM network to offer IPv6 connectivity. Mentioning the alternatives and the implemented services due to the lack of commercial native IPv6 connections, until recently, and the IPv6 support in the Backbone equipments of the UNAM network (RedUNAM). It is also included the history of the development of IPv6 in the Mexico – mainly in the NREN of Mexico (CUDI) - with the tests and results obtained before and after the end of the 6Bone project in 2006, which marked the beginning of an important production phase in the use of IPv6, the continuous transition from IPv4 to IPv6, and the coexistence of both versions. Finally, are mentioned the cooperation and common activities among many universities in the Latin American region and the UNAM, as a result of its IPv6 experimental network (RedUNAMv6) and the use of many connections before and nowadays with the CLARA network (RedCLARA).
