Abstract

Dentro de la cultura popular, el nombre ciencia ficción es un término que se aplica indiscriminadamente a cualquier suceso fuera de lo normal, ya sea parapsicológico, surrealista, relativo a contactos extraterrestres y a toda clase de hechos fantásticos. Pero nada de lo anterior es ciencia ficción, porque al término lo conforman dos palabras que, al referirse a realidades bien definidas y aparentemente contradictorias, se han integrado dialécticamente para dar origen a la rama más vanguardista de la literatura y el arte fantástico. El término ciencia ficción, contra lo que podría pensarse, no es un anglicismo mal avenido con el castellano, pues está aceptado por el Diccionario de la Real Academia de la Lengua Española, donde se define como el “género de obras literarias o cinematográficas, cuyo contenido se basa en hipótesis o logros científicos y técnicos del futuro”. De acuerdo, salvo porque no toda la ciencia ficción tiene como escenario el porvenir, pues una de sus modalidades, la ucronía (reconstrucción lógica que da por supuestos acontecimientos no sucedidos, pero que habrían podido suceder) se desarrolla por lo general en el pasado
