Ciencia, tecnología y sociedad en América del Norte

Abstract

Este texto explica primero cuál es el objeto y qué preguntas buscan responder los estudios de la ciencia, tecnología y sociedad en el contexto particular de América del Norte. Después analiza dos asuntos concretos –el cambio climático y los organismos genéticamente modificados- con el fin de explicar que la evidencia científica en sí, no es suficiente para entender la respuesta social ante las propuestas de la ciencia. Se pone énfasis en distintas interpretaciones de la sociedad canadiense, estadounidense y mexicana en torno a los dos asuntos arriba mencionados y en la tendencia a la divergencia en la región. Las posiciones específicas de cada una de las tres sociedades sólo pueden ser comprendidas por medio de la identificación de actores e intereses involucrados, las instituciones creadas e incluso los aspectos culturales

This text explains first of all, in the special context of North America, the subject and the questions which the study of science, technology and society attempt to answer. Afterwards it analyses two issues –climate change and genetically modified organisms- with the aim of explaining that scientific evidence alone is not sufficient to understand social responses to scientific proposals. Emphasis is placed on the different interpretations made by Canadian, U.S. and Mexican society about the above issues and the tendency toward divergence in the region. The specific positions of each of the three societies can only be realized through the identification of the actors and interests involved, the institutions set up and even cultural aspects
