En el presente, nuestra visión de la vida, la muerte, la enfermedad y el dolor es una amalgama de ideas y creencias. En la actualidad, tanto los adelantos médicos como la Bioética plantean la importancia de que el paciente participe activamente de su tratamiento, lo que en ocasiones acarrea conflictos tanto de índole filosófico como pragmáticos. Es necesario un conocimiento médico mínimo suficiente para la población en general, para que en situación de enfermedad el paciente pueda participar en la toma de decisiones de una manera racional y no dejarse influenciar por el desconocimiento, por ideas irracionales, ni por el medio. Por otro lado es necesario que el personal sanitario tenga una formación humanística que le permita cubrir todas las necesidades del enfermo, la familia y el equipo terapéutico, que posean los conocimientos, las habilidades y las actitudes imprescindibles para tratar a todo tipo de pacientes
