dc.description.abstract | This article responds to two objectives, on one hand we offer a brief description of one of the celebrations during christmas in Santiago Tuxtla, Veracruz. The second objective is to explain a recent adaptation which has been done to the dates and the cycle of this celebration. To do so, we revise briefly some of the concepts Eric Hobsbawm has presented about the “invention of tradition” and their relevance to analize a case like this one. The “carrying of the children” is a parallel celebration to other christmas festivities, it means the figure of baby Jesus is carried from the central park of the city to each of the homes where his navitity awaits. On the way to the nativities a diversity of musical groups play the “pascuas” (a type of local carol), one of the musicians sings the verses and all the pople who walk with them sing the chorus, which varies according to the date. We inclue a few brief musical samples which show some of the local styles in playing and singing the “pascuas” (carols | en |
