Cerebro y mente en el siglo XXI

Abstract

Este ensayo recuenta y reflexiona sobre cómo ha cambiado la concepción de la mente a lo largo de los siglos de la historia humana. Se describe el papel que jugó Thomas Willis en el estudio científico del sistema nervioso con base en el trabajo de Carl Zimmer y cómo en la época actual, llamada neurocéntrica, aunque conocemos mucho más acerca del funcionamiento del sistema nervioso, de los elementos que lo componen y del tipo de interacciones que se da entre ellos, todavía no entendemos del todo cómo el cerebro da origen a lo que concebimos como mente. Se presentan algunas hipótesis al respecto y se discute la visión monista y dualista de la interacción cerebro-mente

This essay reviews and reflects on how our conception of the mind has changed over the centuries of human history. We discuss the role that Thomas Willis played in the scientific study of the nervous system, as presented by Carl Zimmer. And how in this modern Neurocentric age in spite of the scientific advances, and our greater knowledge about the physiology of this system, the elements on which it is built, and the type of interactions that take place among them, we still do not completely understand how the brain gives rise to what we conceive as the mind. We present some hypotheses in this respect, and we discuss both the monist, and dualist views of the interaction between mind and brain
